AI and web technologies help build an educational platform for doctors

The role of a healthcare professional comes with many challenges. Some of them are related to communication with patients, especially when it comes to making difficult decisions and explaining new treatment methods.

About the project

Our client decided to tackle this challenge. Together with NoA Health, we created a new AI-powered platform that helps doctors train their communication with patients in a safe environment, using digital touchpoints. What were the results of our project? Read on!

New technologies, such as AI, AR and other web technologies, have been used in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries for some time now. Artificial intelligence is used to communicate with doctors and patients but also to enhance UX by creating highly engaging experiences for HCPs. Gamification and AR are frequently used to improve educational programs, especially remote ones. One of the crucial aspects of web technologies in the healthcare industry is related to digital training and education applications. Our recent research shows that digital training is one of the major emerging solutions (the second most popular one, to be exact) applicable for the pharma industry:

In order to follow this trend, our client decided to create an educational platform that provides simple and intuitive digital training for HCPs. The goal was to create one digital space where physicians could become familiar with details of the new ways of treatment and, most importantly, practice how they can discuss these new options with patients in a safe training environment.

Pharmaceutical innovation: educational role-play for doctors

As our client’s experience shows, there is a huge need for educational platforms for doctors and other healthcare professionals. One of the core challenges that need to be addressed lies in helping doctors become familiar with details of new ways of treatment and teaching them how to discuss these new options with patients so that they understand details that lead to benefits for their health and to strengthen adherence.

We decided to build a new and innovative tool and conceptual programme that aids in educating HCPs on best practices regarding new treatment findings. To achieve this goal, we've built a platform that provides HCPs with verified educational materials in the form of information and videos. Moreover, users may enter the role-playing mode to train the dialogues and leverage the knowledge gathered in and outside the program. Furthermore, HCPs can select a unique interlocutor profile they would like to role-play with. Each scenario presents a clear objective and desired outcome.

This way, in a safe environment, physicians can train how to talk to patients about matters related to their health, condition and possible treatment methods. At the end of the session, the platform generates the report with the user's track record, including information on how the user did and what can be improved when speaking with a patient.

For such a digital solution to be useful and sufficiently advanced, we had to incorporate some of the latest, cutting-edge technologies. Let’s talk about them for a moment.


One of our main objectives was to create a solution that provides a seamless user experience and mimics actual doctor-patient conversations. For obvious reasons, the platform had to use advanced and modern technology. We decided to incorporate artificial intelligence and some of the related technologies. Thanks to AI, we could make sure this platform will be advanced enough to provide users with the real support they need.

Within this platform, it’s possible to implement even more modern technologies, such as sentiment analysis, which could give additional insight into training dialogues and their outcomes.


Here’s a list of technologies we used to develop Lundbeck’s new platform:

  • Microsoft Language Understanding: Frequently referred to as LUIS. It’s a machine learning-based service that allows users to implement NLP (natural language processing) in their apps, chatbots and even IoT devices. Shortly put, LUIS applies custom machine-learning intelligence to a user's natural language text to predict overall meaning and pull out all the relevant, detailed information. 
  • Voice recognition: This technology allows our platform to know when someone talks and recognise specific words and sentences.
  • Cloud computing: It’s used to host the platform online.

Our approach

There were a few aspects of this project that made it quite challenging to implement. First off, we needed to come through the concept, design and implementation phases quickly. Thanks to our agile approach, we simultaneously managed to do idea verification and technical implementation. As a result, we delivered the project within a six-month period, which is quick, especially in the AI-based environment.

Another challenge was related to the fact that this project was executed in an extremely complex environment (our client is an advanced pharmaceutical organisation, and the healthcare sector was our target group), which required extensive reviews and a complex approval process.

To make this all possible, we decided to go with so-called rapid prototyping. This approach enabled us to quickly agree on the platform’s direction and design and quickly move on to content preparation and development.

Our approach included regular demo meetings with our partners to see how the platform development goes and if any pivots or adjustments were necessary.


Together with NoA Health, we covered all areas that needed to be discussed concerning the big idea behind the platform. We:

  • Created the solution concept
  • Visual identification, UX and UI design
  • Developed the platform
  • Produced all the necessary content, educational materials, dialogue scripts and video shootings

The results

Thanks to our combined efforts, we achieved an unbranded online experience that provides excellent educational resources and online training for HCPs and nurses. Through this platform, they can learn about the techniques and best practices regarding new disease treatments and then practice these techniques in an online role-playing experience.

This case study perfectly shows how new digital technologies support building educational platforms for doctors. These technologies (including AI, machine learning and NLP) make such a platform far more effective and natural. That's particularly essential when you need to address a pressing problem (e.g., related to communication with patients).

Side note: This platform wasn’t developed and made for the covid-19 pandemic, but it actually functions very well in the current situation, with physical meetings limited to a minimum, including training and other educational programs.
